Elena Moon Park presents: Nothing Is Ordinary
This collection of songs is dedicated to the idea that everything around us is magical, while also being oh-so common. We wake up and hear a bird song; in the evening stars appear in the sky. Nothing is ordinary, yet everything is ordinary. Or perhaps, everything is extraordinary.
When I embrace this thought, I find that I notice more of the grand and the mundane. I remember that my greatest joy is in hearing and noticing everyone and everything, and listening to all the stories, large and small.
Many of the songs on this album are inspired by this sentiment – noticing a trace of the moon in the daytime, embracing the act of daydreaming, pondering a childhood inquiry, celebrating a roasted chestnut, reminding ourselves to look up at the world around us.
This is my third all-ages album of music, featuring a mix of reimagined folk and children’s songs from East and Southeast Asia, and original songs inspired by the artwork of my friend Kristiana Pärn. Like all of my past albums, Nothing Is Ordinary is driven first and foremost by collaboration. You’ll hear a mix of sound worlds, ranging from call and response community folk songs to dreamy soundscapes to traditional instrumental sounds like Indonesian gamelan, sanshin, or the gayageum. I feel so lucky and grateful to have the chance to work closely with friends who also happen to be brilliant soundmakers, visual artists, thinkers, dreamers and storytellers.
I believe everyone has a story to share. Find yours and sing it loud.
